Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have finally announced the name of their first daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son together named Archie Harrison.

"We've been lucky so far," Prince Harry joked in a recent interview. "She's very chilled and seems happy to just sit there while Archie is running around like crazy."

While she might be “chilled,” her name is definitely raising some eyebrows, as one royal historian says her name carries a “great weight”.

Cute Nickname

As the story goes, when Queen Elizabeth was only a child, she was unable to pronounce “Elizabeth” correctly. Therefore, as a toddler, King George V affectionately dubbed her “Lilibet” as she struggled with the name.

The term of endearment stuck, and she became not only Lilibet to her family, but the Duke of Edinburgh also refers to his wife as Lilibet as well.

Her middle name, Diana, honors Harry’s later mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in 1997 when Harry was only 12-years-old.

British Stoicism

It’s quite possible that the name Lilibet Diana, honoring both the current Queen and Harry’s late mother, is meant to represent a third way for the royal monarchy, which has been embroiled in a bitter family feud for quite some time.

The current Queen represents a stoic sense of duty to her country. Often appearing unemotional, she has been reticent to give her opinion on many political issues. Although the Sun made worldwide attention with the headline “Queen Backs Brexit” in May 2016, that headline was later ruled as inaccurate.

Amy Jenkins, one of the writers for “The Crown,” spoke about the “horror” of showing emotion, stating, “It’s that British thing, isn’t it? ‘I challenge you to feel something.’ That’s like British bullying. We do it properly and we don’t feel things.”

Diana’s Contributions

Princess Diana, on the other hand, was not only political, but outspoken in the causes that she believed in. Only months before her death, in January 1997, she was photographed walking across the safety corridor in a minefield while supporting the Halo Trust, an anti-landmine charity in Huambo, Angora.

Ten years earlier, in 1987, she also made headlines when a photograph surfaced of her shaking hands with AIDS patient Ivan Cohen without wearing gloves, which was unheard of at the time.

“As a gay man, I found what she did really quite moving,” said one activist. “When she held the hands of Aids patients, I genuinely believe she was doing a spectacle of direct action. She was trying to construct a dramatic image that would advance social change.”

Remembering Her Legacy

Although Princess Diana’s way might have been seen as a deviation from the standard British Royal norm many have come to expect, her social activism has made her an inspiration to many.

Last week, Prince William and Prince Harry got together for the first time since Prince Phillip’s funeral to unveil a statue commemorating Princess Diana on what would have been her 60th birthday. The sculpture depicts their mother with three children, reflecting her mission to support and care for children across the globe.

"Today, on what would have been our Mother's 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character — qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better," said Prince William and Prince Harry in a joint statement. "Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy."
