The original host of “Blue’s Clues,” Steve Burns, returned for the show’s 25th anniversary to explain his sudden departure from the popular children’s TV series that featured Steve and his dog, Blue, solving puzzles and mysteries with the help of an unseen audience.

The show, which debuted on September 8, 1996, saw Steve at the helm until he abruptly left in 2002 to go to college. His hosting duties were handed off to his “brother,” Joe, and, while the show continued, some fans felt that it was never the same without Steve.

Now, almost twenty years later, Steve appeared on Nick Jr.’s Twitter page to address his “abrupt” departure from the show.

Why Did He Leave The Show?

Although Steve was popular with audiences, he stated that “he could not make a life-long career out of it.” Part of the reason for his departure came from his history of male pattern baldness. Although he wanted to shave his head for many years, producers would not allow it.

Although he dropped his first album, “Songs for Dustmites,” a year after he left "Blue’s Clues,’" Steve insists that he never left the show to pursue a music career.

In a 2016 interview, he revealed that “People think I left the show to pursue a music career. That didn't happen at all. I left the show because it was just simply time to go. I was pretty much playing a boyish, older-brotherish kind of character on the show. I was getting older; I was losing my hair; a lot of the original people on the show, like the people who created it, were all moving on to other careers. It just felt like time. I just had a gut feeling like it was time to go.”

Why Was ‘Scream Queens’ Cancelled?

And, more importantly, might we be getting a reboot?

Remembering The Good Times

In the video, Steve recalls how “when we were younger we used to run around and hang out with Blue, and find clues, and talk to Mr. Salt, and freak out about the mail, and do all the fun stuff? And then, one day, I was like, ‘Oh, hey, guess what? Big news…I’m leaving.'”

“And then I got on a bus and I left and we didn’t see each other for like, a really long time. Can we just…talk about that? Because I realize that was kind of abrupt. I just kind of got up and went to college. That was really challenging by the way, but great, because I got to use my mind and take a step at a time and now I literally am doing many of the things that I wanted to do.”

The line is a throwback to the original Blue’s Clues theme, “’Cause when we use our minds, take a step at a time, we can do anything that we wanna do.”

‘I Never Forgot You’

Steve seemed to address his grown-up audience in the second part of the video.

“Look at all you have done and all you have accomplished in all that time. And it's just… it's just so amazing, right? I mean, we started out with clues, and now it's what? Student loans, and jobs, and families, and some of it has been kind of hard, you know? I know you know."

“And I wanted to tell you that I really couldn’t have done all of that without your help. And, in fact, all the help that you helped me with when we were younger is still helping me today. Right now. And that’s super cool.”

“I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years I never forgot you. Ever. And I'm super glad we're still friends. Thanks for listening.”

“You look great, by the way,” Steve concluded as he headed off camera. “Whatever you’re doing, it’s working.”

Fan Reactions

Fans were ecstatic to see their old friend Steve again. Many reminisced on what it was like watching "Blue’s Clues" with their own children.

“Great kids show! Steve did a wonderful job!” one fan commented. “All 4 of our kids enjoyed watching it growing up. It was one of the few kids shows that, in my mind, stood up there with the shows I grew up with in the 70’s and early 80’s. It was fun to watch, playful, and actually taught basic problem solving and thinking skills.”

Others felt inspired by Steve’s words of kindness.

“hearing steve again… takes me back to a time when happiness felt so simple and kindness came so easily,” a fan tweeted. “to the kids who were tiny back when I was, in the 90s/00s, please keep being kind to yourselves, even if no one else is. don’t stop believing in you.”

Other fans hoped that the Steve’s appearance meant a revival for a more adult series.

“Can Steve come back and compassionately tell me how to get a Clue as an adult. Like how to qualify for a mortgage and meal prep?” a fan asked, while another added, “Thats actually a clever idea. Call it 'Steve and You Get a Clue,' and have it be a sort of 'here's how you do this' show for adults.’”

Although Steve hasn't announced any plans to host another TV show, we'll keep our fingers crossed!
