Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, has a lot of high-profile friendships. One of the most surprising might be his friendship with fellow ginger and best-selling artist Ed Sheeran.

Although Sheeran has now become one of the best-selling artists of all time, he came from humble origins, performing small gigs in London in 2008. It wasn’t until his debut single “The A Team” became an international hit in 2011 did his career start to take off, earning him the title of “Artist of the Decade.”

Here’s a look at how their unlikely friendship developed!

In 2019, the two teamed up for a joint video honoring World Mental Health Day. In the video, Sheeran jokingly tells Prince Harry that he’s “really excited” to bring awareness to a topic he is “quite passionate about”: standing up for gingers.

“Um, okay, slightly awkward,” Harry responds. “There may be a miscommunication, but this is about World Mental Health Day.”

The video shared numerous organizations and accounts that supported mental health and wellness, including “Heads Together,” a foundation created by Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate Middleton, through the Royal Foundation.

Fatherhood

The two caught up again in July 2021 to discuss the challenges of fatherhood. Prince Harry has a 2-year-old son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, and a 1-month-old daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

Ed Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn announced the birth of their first child, a daughter named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran in 2020.

“Congratulations, a girl, right?” Ed asked of Harry’s newborn daughter. “We just had a little girl ten months ago now. You’re still in the trenches now. How do you manage with two?”

“Two is definitely a juggle,” Harry joked, although he admitted that his daughter was “very chilled,” adding, “We’ve been lucky so far. She’s very chilled and seems happy to just sit there while Archie is running around like crazy.”

Prince Harry isn’t the only member of the royal family that Sheeran seems to have befriended.

At a Royal Variety Performance, the “Perfect” singer met with Prince William, who joked, “Er, no more duets with Wayne Rooney.”

He is referring to the time when Sheeran and footballer Wayne Rooney paired up after one of Ed’s gigs in Manchester. The two visited a pub together and entertained guests with a lively rendition of “Lego House.”

They were also seen cheering on England at Euro 2020.

New Music

Although Sheeran has been on a bit of a hiatus, he surprised fans when he dropped the music video for his new song, “Bad Habits,” last month.

The song has stayed at the number one spot on the U.K. charts for the past four weeks.

Although he has not yet revealed when his newest album will drop, he did hint that it will come some time in 2021 after he closed his birthday message in February with the promise, “I’ll be back online with the 4th instalment in the series later this year, until then.”
