Florence Pugh is a 25-year-old actress born in Oxford, United Kingdom. Her first film credit includes the 2014 drama “The Falling,” but it was her 2016 title role in the independent drama “Lady Macbeth” that put her on the map and earned her a British Independent Film Award.

Throughout her career, she has also been nominated for several other awards, including her role as Dani Ardor in the horror film “Midsommar” and Amy March in the critically acclaimed period film “Little Women.”

Even still, it’s her role as Yelena Belova in Marvel’s recent “Black Widow” film that really has everyone talking.

Pugh stars opposite of Scarlett Johansson and her character of Natasha Romanoff, in which Johansson is set to reprise her role as the titular character for the last time.

Although the film was originally scheduled to premiere in May 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the release back to July 9, 2021. The film has proven to be a success, smashing records with a $80 million dollar opening at the North American box office.

Pugh’s role has been met with critical acclaim, with one review saying, “Yelena is fun, and sort of messy, and despite her assassin status she still seems like someone you could hang out with. I imagine no viewer has ever thought this about Scarlett Johansson or Natasha Romanoff, which is part of why Pugh so thoroughly snatches the movie.”

A Marvel Career

In a new interview, Pugh confessed that she’s “never been on a film of this scale” and described how “daunting” it was to prepare for the film.

“I definitely had no idea what they were going to expect from me and actually Scarlett was super helpful with all of that and sitting there and listening to what she said about the last 9 years of her, I suppose, career in this Marvel Universe,” she explained.

Although she is unsure of what to expect from her new popularity, she admits, “I think it’s a wonderful thing to have followers and have fans and for people to respect my work and respect the fact that I am now part of the Marvel Universe and I suppose I’ll just have to see. But I’ve always been a very honest and open person with interviews and with fans and I hope I can continue doing that and it’s only wonderful to be a part of such a big and growing family.”

For fans of Pugh’s new role in the Marvel universe, this is not the last time that Pugh is set to appear in the MCU. In a post-credit scene, Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, played by “Veep” veteran Julia Louis-Dreyfus handed a photo to Yelena of her next target: Clint Barton. Barton, also known as Hawkeye, has been played by Jeremy Renner and is no stranger to the Marvel universe.

The 8-episode Disney Plus exclusive series follows on the heels of other successful Marvel spin-off shows, such as “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “Loki.” Not much is known about the series so far, except that Renner will reprise his role as Hawkeye, Pugh will reprise her role as Yelena, and Hailee Steinfeld will appear as Kate Bishop.

It is rumored for release later this year.

Net Worth

Although it is currently unclear how much Pugh was paid to appear in “Black Widow,” one source reported that Scarlett Johansson earned a whopping $15 million base salary to appear in the film.

Pugh’s net worth is averaged to be only about $1.4 million to date, whereas Johansson’s net worth is $165 million in comparison, making her over 100 times richer.

Her Black Widow appearances in many Marvel films, along with her leading roles in the “Iron Man” and “Avengers” films, no doubt played a significant contribution to her net worth.

With Pugh set to reprise her role as Yelena as Marvel enters its next phase, it might just be the beginning of a long and lucrative career for Marvel's newest assassin.
